TLDR

Cẩm Châu isn’t a single block — it’s a patchwork of micro-neighborhoods, each with a distinct feel. Riverside bustle. Inland paddy quiet. Coconut villages. An evening lantern strip. This guide walks you through every area, who it suits, and what it’s like to actually live there for a few days.

Insider Tip

Pick your micro-neighborhood around the time of day you care most about. Riverside for sunset and evening walks, inland for mornings and paddy light, An Hội for after-dark lanterns.

Riverside Cẩm Châu (Trần Nhân Tông strip)

This is the commercial spine and where most hotels — Shining River Side among them — are located. You get river views, boat traffic in the morning, sunsets over the water, and direct walking access to the Ancient Town over the An Hội bridge. Restaurants, cafés, spas and convenience stores line the road.

Best for: first-timers, anyone over 40 looking for a quiet-but-central base, families who want walkable everything.

The riverside strip along Tran Nhan Tong runs for about 1.2 kilometres and has most of Cam Chau’s mid-range and upper-tier hotels. Rooms with a river view cost roughly 300,000 to 500,000 VND more per night than garden-view equivalents, and for a three-night stay most travellers think it is worth it. Bicycle rental from hotels on this strip is usually free for guests; if you are staying elsewhere, shops on Cua Dai rent for 30,000 VND per day or 50,000 VND with a child seat.

Inland Cẩm Châu (paddy side)

Step 300m inland from Trần Nhân Tông and you’re among small villas, garden guesthouses and open rice paddies. Pace drops dramatically. Mornings are full of cycling groups and roosters; afternoons are hot; evenings are fireflies and barbecue smoke.

Best for: long-stayers, digital nomads, photographers, anyone who values view over proximity.

The inland paddy side is where the homestay scene has grown fastest in the last few years. Many of the family-run homestays sit on a single-lane road that runs parallel to the river about 800 metres inland. Expect 350,000 to 700,000 VND per night for a simple en-suite room with fan or air-conditioning and breakfast. The trade-off is that taxis and Grabs can be slower to reach you because of narrow lanes, and walking at night requires a torch because street lighting is patchy.

Riverfront Cam Chau evening

An Hội (across the bridge)

Technically a small island rather than Cẩm Châu proper, but most guests lump them together. Lanterns, night market, live music, and boats drifting past with candles. Noise peaks 7–10pm and settles by midnight.

Best for: first-timers who prioritise atmosphere over sleep; short stays; couples.

Cẩm Thanh — Coconut Village

East of Cẩm Châu, reaching toward Cua Dai Beach. Water-coconut palms, basket boats, and a growing number of villa resorts. Restaurants here tend to be larger, tour-bus friendly but also quieter in the evenings.

Best for: beach-plus-village holidays, groups with a rental van or two scooters, kids.

Cam Thanh village is a 10-minute cycle east from Cam Chau centre and is home to the famous Bay Mau coconut forest. Basket-boat rides (thung chai) through the palms cost 150,000 to 250,000 VND per person and last 45 to 60 minutes. Many of the rides include a short fishing demonstration and a cycle-taxi cover to keep the sun off. The village itself has a string of small family kitchens serving lunch at 40,000 to 80,000 VND per dish.

Rice paddy path Cam Chau

Cua Dai / An Bang Beach Edge

The farthest east you can still call ‘Hoi An area’. Beachfront resorts, surf schools, sunset bars. You trade 10 minutes of commute into town for the Pacific on your doorstep.

Best for: beach-first visitors, honeymoons, anyone who’d rather cycle to lanterns than walk.

Old Town (for comparison)

Worth understanding even if you don’t stay there. Inside the UNESCO-pedestrianised core, properties are charming, small, and tend to cost more per unit of comfort. Scooter traffic is banned at peak — convenient to walk, annoying for taxis and luggage.

Best for: one-night visits, maximum atmosphere, anyone who enjoys being in the middle of the picture you see on Instagram.

How to Pick

Walking distance + quiet sleep → Riverside Cẩm Châu. Paddy view + slow pace → inland. Lanterns + party → An Hội. Coconut palms + mid-range beach → Cẩm Thanh. Ocean first → Cua Dai/An Bang.

For first-time visitors on a three or four night stay, riverside Cam Chau hits the best balance of proximity to the old town, river views, and easy access to Cam Thanh and An Bang. For longer stays of a week or more, the inland paddy homestays offer a quieter rhythm that suits slow travel. For beach-focused holidays, the An Bang edge of Cam Chau makes the morning-swim ritual genuinely easy. Old Town itself is charming but loud from 6am to 10pm and most locals choose to stay elsewhere.
