TLDR

Cẩm Châu sits on the east side of Hoi An, hugging the Thu Bon River and a short walk — or a 5-minute scooter ride — from the Ancient Town. It’s the sweet spot between the buzz of the Old Town and the quiet of the rice paddies. This guide covers the main micro-areas, what each is good for, and how to pick the right base.

Insider Tip

Rooms that face the river or the rice paddies are worth the small upgrade — they stay quieter at night and catch the best morning light. Ask specifically for a paddy-view or river-view room when booking.

Cẩm Châu Riverside — Best for First-Time Visitors

This is the stretch along Trần Nhân Tông and the Thu Bon River, where Shining River Side Hotel sits. You get river views, morning boat traffic, and a 10–15 minute walk to the Japanese Covered Bridge. Restaurants, coffee shops and small convenience stores line the road, so everything you need day-to-day is a few minutes away.

Pick this area if it’s your first time in Hoi An and you want a balance between atmosphere and quiet. It’s walkable, well-lit at night, and the taxis and GrabBikes are plentiful.

The riverside strip along Tran Nhan Tong has the largest concentration of Cam Chau’s four-star hotels and upper-tier boutique properties. Expect 1,500,000 to 3,000,000 VND per night in high season for a room with river view, pool access, and included breakfast. The walk to the old town from the southern end of the strip is about 15 minutes; from the northern end closer to 25 minutes. Bicycle rental is almost always free for guests and most properties run a free shuttle to An Bang Beach twice a day.

Inland Cẩm Châu — Best for Rice Paddy Views

Move a few hundred metres inland and the landscape opens up into rice paddies. Accommodation here tends to be small villas and guesthouses with gardens, pools and paddy-facing rooms. Bicycle hire is common and you’ll see farmers working the fields by hand at dawn.

It’s quieter, slightly cheaper, and a favourite with digital nomads and long-stay guests. The trade-off is a 15–20 minute walk to the Old Town — fine by bicycle, longer on foot in the summer heat.

Near An Hội and the Night Market

Just over the bridge from Cẩm Châu you hit An Hội island — lantern-lined streets, the night market, boat rides down the river. Staying this side means you’re one minute from the market, but the nights get busy. Light sleepers should ask for a room at the back.

An Hoi is the small island across the covered bridge from the old town and is where the night market operates. Staying here puts you close to the lantern-lit nightlife but the downside is noise until around 11pm. Several smaller hotels and a couple of boutique hostels sit just off the night-market strip. Prices run 600,000 to 1,500,000 VND per night for a mid-range room. Light sleepers should request a room on the back side of the building facing the river rather than the market.

Cẩm Thanh — Best for Coconut Village & Beach Access

South-east of Cẩm Châu, Cẩm Thanh is where the coconut palms, basket boat tours and Cua Dai Beach shuttles start. Pick it if you want a day-to-day mix of beach, river and village cycling. You’re further from the Old Town — 10 minutes by scooter — but closer to the sand.

What to Look For in Accommodation

Location beats luxury in Hoi An. A well-placed 3-star with a pool and free bikes will serve you better than a bigger resort on the outskirts. Check for: walking distance to the Old Town, river or paddy view, free bicycle hire, airport transfer options, and an on-site restaurant for rainy days.

Breakfast is worth prioritising too — most Cẩm Châu hotels, including Shining River Side, serve a strong Vietnamese-plus-Western spread that saves you a meal out.

How to Decide

First trip: stay riverside in Cẩm Châu. Second or third trip: try inland for the paddies, or Cẩm Thanh for the coconut village. Travelling with kids: a hotel with a pool matters more than location. Travelling to eat and shop: stay within 10 minutes of An Hội.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cẩm Châu a good area for first-time visitors to Hoi An?

Yes. Cẩm Châu is quiet, safe, and a short walk or ride from the Ancient Town. Most visitors staying here only need a scooter for day trips — everything in Hoi An itself is within 10–20 minutes.

How far is Cẩm Châu from Hoi An Ancient Town?

About 1.5 km on foot — 15–20 minutes walking or 4–5 minutes by scooter, GrabBike or bicycle.

Are there good restaurants within walking distance of Cẩm Châu hotels?

Plenty. Trần Nhân Tông and the connecting lanes are lined with Vietnamese family kitchens, cafés, and a handful of Western-style spots. Most hotels, including Shining River Side, also run their own restaurant.

Is Cẩm Châu safe at night?

Yes. Streets are well-lit, GrabBikes run late, and petty crime rates are low. Normal travel precautions apply — don’t leave bags unattended and watch your phone on the back of scooters.

Should I stay riverside or inland?

Riverside for atmosphere and walkability; inland for paddy views, quiet, and a little more value. Both are within bicycle distance of everything that matters.

Can I walk to Cua Dai Beach from Cẩm Châu?

It’s walkable but a stretch — about 4 km. Most guests cycle (20 minutes) or take a scooter (8 minutes). Some hotels run a free beach shuttle; check when booking.
